Understanding Auto-Generated Shopify Domains
This is the most important concept to understand about your Kenso license. Many support issues come from confusion about this!
The Three Types of Domains
Every Shopify store can have up to THREE types of domains:
1. Auto-Generated Domain (REQUIRED for Kenso)
When you create a Shopify store, Shopify automatically generates a random domain with letters and numbers:
z6txxs-04.myshopify.com
veg6a-4a.myshopify.com dh3ksl-ds.myshopify.com
Key facts:
- Contains random letters AND numbers
- Cannot be changed, ever
- Assigned automatically at store creation
- This is what Kenso requires for license activation
2. Custom myshopify.com Domain (won't work)
Shopify lets you change your myshopify.com subdomain to a readable name:
mystore.myshopify.com
cool-shoes.myshopify.com sneaker-vault.myshopify.com
Key facts:
- These are readable words/names without random numbers
- You can change these (which is why we don't accept them)
- These won't work for Kenso activation
3. Custom Domain (also won't work)
This is a domain you purchase and connect:
yourcoolstore.com
Key facts:
- You can change this anytime
- You can have multiple custom domains
- Not used for license activation
Why We Require the Auto-Generated Domain
We lock licenses to your original auto-generated domain because:
- It can never be changed - Custom myshopify domains can be changed, but the auto-generated one is permanent
- It's truly unique - No two stores have the same auto-generated domain
- It proves store ownership - Only the original store owner knows this domain
How to Tell the Difference
| Domain Type | Example | Has Numbers? | Works for Kenso? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto-generated | z6txxs-04.myshopify.com | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Auto-generated | veg6a-4a.myshopify.com | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Custom myshopify | mystore.myshopify.com | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Custom myshopify | cool-shoes.myshopify.com | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Custom domain | mystore.com | N/A | ❌ No |
Simple rule: If it has random numbers mixed with letters, it's the auto-generated one we need!
Common Confusion
"I entered mystore.myshopify.com and it didn't work"
That's a custom myshopify domain (no numbers). You need your auto-generated domain:
❌ Wrong: mystore.myshopify.com (no numbers) ❌ Wrong: cool-shoes.myshopify.com (no numbers) ✅ Correct: z6txxs-04.myshopify.com (has numbers)
"My customers use my custom domain - will the theme work?"
Yes, absolutely! Your custom domain is completely separate from license activation. Customers will see your custom domain, and the theme works perfectly.
"I changed my custom myshopify domain - is my license affected?"
This is exactly why we need the auto-generated domain! If you changed z6txxs-04.myshopify.com to mystore.myshopify.com, your license is still locked to z6txxs-04.myshopify.com.
How to Find Your Auto-Generated Domain
- Go to Shopify Admin
- Click Settings (bottom left)
- Click Domains
- Look for the domain with random letters and numbers ending in
.myshopify.com
Even if you've set a custom myshopify domain, your original auto-generated one should still be visible in the domains list.
Examples
| Store Name | Auto-Generated Domain | Custom myshopify | Custom Domain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nike's Resells | z6txxs-04.myshopify.com | nikesresells.myshopify.com | nikesresells.com |
| Top Vendors | veg6a-4a.myshopify.com | topvendors.myshopify.com | topvendors.net |
| My Store | dh3ksl-ds.myshopify.com | (not set) | (none yet) |
In all cases, you'd activate your license with the auto-generated domain (the one with numbers)!
